US History Questions (8-22)


1) What is your general impression of the Americas before the arrival of Columbus?
            They were stable, well developing civilizations, until Columbus came and brought diseases and war upon them. 
2) What groups formed the Iroquois League? When was this group formed and for what reason?
            The Onondaga, Seneca, Mohawk, Oneida and Cayuga formed the Iroquois League. This league was formed in the 1500s to keep peace between the five nations.
3) What are hieroglyphics? What Native groups used them?
            Hieroglyphics use symbols or pictures to represent things, ideas, and sounds. They were used by the Mayans.
4) What type of dwelling was common among the people of the Southwest?
            Pueblos.
5) What was the first crop raised by Native Americans in Mexico?
            Maize.
1   6)What was the population of the Americas in 1491?
a.     10-100 million
2.    7)What advantages did the Europeans have over the Native Americans?
a.     They had better warfare technology such as gunpowder.
b.    They brought diseases with them that the natives had no idea how to deal with; therefore it killed quite a few hundred of them.
c.     The also knew how to write and read and the Natives did not.
3.   8) How did the crusades affect (or lead to) the discovery of the Americas?
a.     Roman Empire falls then splits into multiple pockets of countries. 1095- 1291- Technical Crusades. Came into contact with Muslims. Discover a taste for Asian spices, trade. 13th-14th Renaissance begins in Italy. Immediate trade through Asia. Don't want to pay tax so the begin to look  for different trade routes. 1492-- Columbus goes to American looking for resources, trade.
4.    9) What did Europe want in the East Indies (China, Japan, India, Malaysia)?
a.     Silk
b.    Spices
5.  10)  How was Marco Polo important to the Discovery of the Americas?
a.     When people read his book, it made people want to explore the world just as he did. Columbus read the book and it caused him to sail to America.


11) Create a chart with a list of Native Americans according to each region. For this chart give dates (if possible) for the raise and fall of the group. Also, include major achievements of each group.
